Model ND-3 is a phase noise detector module that may be used to measure AM or PM noise. The module has a noise detector that can be used to make very high-resolution single channel measurements. Two modules can be combined to create a dual channel measurement system. A dual-channel system with cross-correlation noise analysis can allow an effective reduction of at least 10 – 20 dB from the system noise floor. The IF amplifier has variable gain and bandwidth settings. The IF amplifier input can be switched to the front panel to allow connection of an external mixer. A calibration input is available for automatic gain calibration. The ND-3 includes an adjustable bandwidth phase-lock loop that can be used when measuring oscillators to lock the reference and device under test.

The ND-3NM plugs into the NMS mainframe and requires one of the Phase Noise Measurement System Controllers. The NMSC-1 provides Fourier noise analysis from DC to 1 MHz from the carrier. The NMSC-2 extends the Fourier frequency analysis range up to 40 MHz. The ND-3NM uses one slot of the system mainframe.
